PUPIL PREMIUM

WHAT IS PUPIL PREMIUM?

Pupil Premium funding is an amount of money awarded to a school to help provide additional support to those pupils who are in receipt of Free School Meals (not universal), have been entitled to Free School Meals in the last six years, have been adopted from care or have a parent in the Armed Forces.

The Government provides Pupil Premium funding, which is additional to main school funding, to address the current inequalities in attainment by ensuring that the funding is used to reach out to those pupils who need it most. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils.

School can decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their school. The amount of money varies depending on which category a child is eligible for.

WHAT DO I DO IF I THINK MY CHILD IS ENTITLED TO PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING?

If you or your partner are a member of the Armed Forces, have adopted a child from care or think you are eligible for Free School Meals (Joint family income of less than £16 190 pre April 2018 or less than £7400 a year from the 1st April 2018 for new applicants) then feel free to pop into school to collect a form or simply download it from the bottom of this page.

You can read more about applying for Free School Meals here:

We encourage all eligible families to apply for free school meals as this brings additional funding into school for your child’s education. Even if your child is having Universal Free School Meals, your child could still be eligible for Free School Meals entitlement.

From 1 April 2023, Pupil Premium eligibility for pupils who have been adopted from care or have left care will include children adopted from outside of England and Wales.

PUPIL PREMIUM STATEMENT

All children entitled to Free School Meals will bring a Pupil Premium additional funding into school. This additional funding is used to help support eligible children to make greater progress and attainment and to reduce the gap between the highest and lowest achievers.

At Haslington Primary Academy Nursery the Pupil Premium funding is used:

  • To maintain and enhance the extensive curriculum provision including English, Mathematics including additional interventions
  • To provide resources to scaffold learning at home.
  • To enhance the opportunities children, have access to including a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities
  • To support with funding for residential and educational visits
  • To provide an item of uniform (e.g, sweatshirt, polo shirt)
  • To support the emotional well-being of children if they are to be successful and independent learners
  • To support emotional well-being through the Art Specialist and enrichment programmes
  • To provide advice and support through the Family Link Worker

The Principal, in consultation with the governors and staff, will decide how the Pupil Premium is spent for the benefit of the entitled pupils. The school  recognises some pupils who do not receive Free School Meals, may have some significant barriers to learning. Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery, reserves the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil who has been legitimately been identified as being disadvantaged or at risk of being unable to access learning effectively. Pupil Premium funding will be allocated on a needs basis, linked to analysis of outcomes for pupils.

HOW IS THE IMPACT MONITORED?

Assessment procedures at Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery are robust and staff are rigorous in monitoring and evaluating the progress of all children. This is achieved  in our ‘pupil progress’ meetings each half term, where any child who is not on track or has not made adequate progress is identified, and then targeted support  is provided. Students eligible for Pupil Premium funding are identified through this process and support mapped on to the range of resources the school has to offer.

Governors will ensure that there is an annual statement to parents, carers and guardians, on how the Pupil Premium funding has been used to address the issues of ‘narrowing the gap’ for socially disadvantaged pupils.
