HISTORY

INTENT

At Haslington Primary Academy, we ensure our History curriculum helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past, and equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. The teaching of History will help pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. At Haslington Primary Academy, we follow the KAPOW scheme of work for History.

IMPLEMENTATION

To ensure all children cover all areas of the History curriculum, we use the KAPOW scheme of work, a progression of skills document and progression of knowledge document, to ensure a high-quality curriculum is taught throughout the school (years 1 – 6).

Knowledge organisers are displayed in Knowledge Organiser Journals to support children with what they will be learning, vocabulary they may come across and how their new learning links to previous learning. Timelines are also displayed in Key Stage 2 children’s books to support with chronology, alongside the teaching of Topics chronologically.

Every term, each class teacher chooses one child to receive our Historian of the Term award to celebrate their achievements and learning in History.

IMPACT

Throughout the year, the subject lead will monitor the planning, teaching, and assessing of History through lesson observations, pupil voices, book scrutinies, and checking learning and assessments against the progression of skills and knowledge.

As a school, we also meet with other History subject leads from across the Trust, cluster schools and local high schools, for support, and to ensure that our expectations are similar, as well as our assessments.
