GEOGRAPHY

INTENT

At Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery, we ensure a high-quality Geography education inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and it’s people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time. At Haslington Primary Academy, we follow the KAPOW scheme of work for Geography.

IMPLEMENTATION

To ensure all children cover all areas of the Geography curriculum, , we use the KAPOW scheme of work, a progression of skills document and progression of knowledge document, to ensure a high-quality curriculum is taught throughout the school (years 1 – 6).

Knowledge organisers are displayed in Knowledge Organiser Journels to support children with what they will be learning, vocabulary they may come across and how their new learning links to previous learning.

Every term, each class teacher chooses one child to receive our Geographer of the Term award to celebrate their achievements and learning in Geography.

Mr Bradbury, our sports coach from Adv4nce Sports, is now also delivering half termly orienteering lessons to every class to cover part of the local fieldwork aspect to the Geography curriculum.

Key Stage 1 will cover the key skills:

  • Physical: balancing, travelling actions
  • Social: communication, sharing ideas, inclusion, encouraging and supporting others
  • Emotional: confidence, trust, honestly
  • Thinking: decision making, using tactics, providing instructions, planning, problem solving

Key Stage 2 will cover the key skills:

  • Social: communication, teamwork, trust, inclusion, listening
  • Emotional: confidence
  • Thinking: planning, map reading, decision making, problem solving

These key skills also link in with our school’s RESPECT values.

IMPACT

Throughout the year, the subject lead will monitor the planning, teaching, and assessing of Geography through lesson observations, pupil voices, book scrutinies, and checking learning and assessments against the progression of skills.

As a school, we also meet with other Geography subject leads from across the Trust, cluster schools and local high schools, for support, and to ensure that our expectations are similar, as well as our assessments.
