Y1-Y6 HOMEWORK
Y1-Y6 HOMEWORK GUIDANCE

At Haslington Primary Academy, homework is given to help scaffold your child’s learning.  The homework is given so that children can consolidate their learning, practise vital skills, try new challenges and discover more about the topics they are investigating. Hearing your child read, practising multiplication tables and spellings makes a huge difference.

READING – This is the most important thing you can do with your child – it opens your child up to a whole world of learning new knowledge. We encourage children to read every night to build stamina and develop a love of reading. Reading should be recoded in your child’s reading log at least 5 times per week and two activities should be completed in the red reading journal.

SPELLING – Spellings are taught weekly by learning about different spelling rules and patterns. The focus is shared each week on Dojo and your child will record any words they have found difficult in their spelling log. Please support your child by practising these words at home. We do not administer weekly spelling tests but do take part in a range of activities to consolidate this learning.

MATHS – Children are given one piece of maths homework each week. This is always linked to their learning in school and will help them apply and consolidate their skills. Please support their child with this.

When completing homework try to find a quiet place away from distractions such as TVs, phones, computers and tablet type devices. Let your child have complete the task independently first, and if they need help, offer ideas – don’t do it for them. Homework should never feel like a battle or take excessive time to complete. If you have any problems with your child completing their homework, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
