MUSIC
INTENT
At Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery, music is an integral part of our curriculum. We believe strongly in the power of music to enhance creativity and support learning in all subjects. All children will be taught the skills and knowledge of music as outlined in the programme of study in the Model Music Curriculum 2021. Pupils’ musical development is further supported by the provisions outlined in the National Plan for Music Education 2022.
IMPLEMENTATION
Planning and teaching of music is completed by specialist teaching staff. We also use Sing Up to help supplement our planning, which helps make music lessons engaging for all pupils. Children also take part in singing assemblies and performances throughout the year.
We also enjoy completing performances where we invite parents, carers and guardians to attend. This allows children to showcase their musical talents and perform in front of an audience.
We currently have a KS2 choir who have enjoyed performing for their friends and the wider community. Children also have the opportunity to complete music lessons with external music providers who come into school to complete lessons. We also offer a wide range of afterschool clubs, which have included a band club and a guitar club.
IMPACT
Our music lead works collaboratively with specialist teaching staff to monitor the planning, teaching and assessment of music through lesson observations, pupil voice and assessing progress. As a school, we also meet with other music subject leads from across the Trust, cluster schools and local high schools for support and to ensure that our expectations are similar, as well as our assessments.
