YEAR 1
MRS ROOME/MISS HETHERINGTON
MRS ROOME
Mrs Roome has worked at Haslington since April 2021 and has taught across all year groups. Her favourite subjects are computing and science which is due to her background as an electrical engineer before working in education. She has over 10 years’ experience teaching across KS1 and KS2. She is currently a Year 1 class teacher and MFL subject lead here at Haslington. She takes great pride in her nurturing approach and is passionate about inspiring every child to achieve their goals and be the very best version of themselves.
We are very lucky in Year 1 to be supported by Mrs Harris, who is an incredible teaching assistant. She has supported children at all different stages of their development in her 16 years of working at Haslington, from EYFS to Year 6. She enjoys working with the children in the classroom and making learning fun.
MISS HETHERINGTON
Miss Hetherington joined our school in September 2020 from Monks Coppenhall Academy and has been teaching for 10 years in Key Stage 1. She specialises in SEND and is our school SENCO and Mental Health Lead. Miss Hetherington enjoys teaching Science and Art and has a love of Poetry.
YEAR 1 CURRICULUM
In Year One each term we focus on a different topic. You can find more information about what we are learning at the beginning of each term in the files below.
In Year 1, children will bring home a Maths homework activity on Thursdays to be returned for marking on Mondays. The children will be given up to 10 questions to recap on previous learning in class. If they complete their maths homework, they will earn an extra smiley for the week.
Children will also be expected to read at home 5 times a week and complete a reading activity in their reading journals. Doing both of these will earn them 2 extra smileys each week. Please ensure that the reading diary is signed each time your child reads at home, so we can reward the children with their reading smileys.
During the half term holidays, children will be set half term projects to complete, based on their learning in class. Completing this will earn the children up to 3 additional smileys each.
